But the 9 history-related DVDs are, on the whole, arranged in chronological order. So they can be considered as a single DVD. And thereby the total ways could be 32!. Why are the arrangement of 9 DVDs getting divided? Shouldn't division be done when the objects are identical?

Good Question ! :)

There is a difference between what this question asks and the interpretation you've made.

In your version, the history related DVDs need to stay together. However, this is an incorrect understanding.

We need to arrange the 9 history-related DVDs are, on the whole, in chronological order. This means the DVDs need not be placed together (next to each other) but on whole arrangement of the history DVDs needs to be in chronological order.

Let's take a subset and see what this means -

Say there are 2 History DVDs - H1 H2 and 2 Biology DVDs - D1 D2. The history DVDs on the whole needs to arranged in chronological order (H1 --> H2)

D1 H1 D2 H2 -- This is a valid arrangement

D1 H2 D2 H1 -- This is a NOT valid arrangement as H2 comes before H1.

H1 D1 D2 H2 -- This is a valid arrangement

The DVDs need not be placed as shown below, they can be however (it is not MUST though)

D1 H1 H2 D2 -- Valid but not a MUST condition.

Hope this helps !
