The number of children in a certain family is a prime number less than 10. The number of boys in the family is greater than the number of girls, and the number of boys is a prime number. If at least 1 of the children in the family is a girl, which of the following could be the number of boys in the family?

I. 2
II. 3
III. 5

A. I only
B. II only
C. III only
D. I and II only
E. I, II, and III

Let's understand the question line by line -

  • The number of children in a certain family is a prime number less than 10.
    Inference: The number of children is 2 , 3, 5 or 7.
  • The number of boys in the family is greater than the number of girls, and the number of boys is a prime number. If at least 1 of the children in the family is a girl,
    Inference: Because we have at least one girl in the family the total number of children cannot be 2.

Answer choice elimination

I. 2 --> 2 boys + 1 girl = 3 children -- Possible
II. 3 --> 3 boys + 2 girls = 5 children -- Possible
III. 5 --> 5 boys + 2 girls = 7 children -- Possible

Option E
