Mona and Donald fly to Rome for the weekend. They take cash only in notes of $10 and notes of €10. Mona carries three times the amount of euros Donald carries. She also carries as many dollars as Donald carries. The number of €10 notes they take is double the number of $10 notes they take. If Donald carries a total of 40 notes (of either $10 or €10,) then what is the total number of notes (of either $10 or €10,) they take?

So X+ Y = 40
And as per question
4Y = 4X
X= Y
X+Y = 40
2X = 40
X= 20
So Y= 20
So total notes 2X+4Y = 2X+4X(X=Y)
=6X = 120

Donald total euros = X
Mona total euros = 3X - (the question says Mona carries three times the amount of euros Donald Carries)
Donald total dollars = Y
Mona total dollars = Y - (the question says she also carries as much dollars as Donald carries)
Total = 4X + 2Y
Now what we know is that the number of euros is 2 times the amount of dollars
4X = 2Y*2
4X = 4Y
Divide both sides by 4
X = Y
So now we have
Total = 4X + 2X
Total = 6X
To find X let’s make another equation
So Donald has 40 note, of them X are euros and Y (which is equal to X)is the dollars
So
40 = 2X
Divide both sides by 2
20 = X
Total = 6X
Substitute
Total = 6*20
Total = 120
Answer = D
Or you can now do
Donald euros = 20
Mona euros = 20*3 = 60
Donald dollars = 20
Mona dollars = 20
Add them 20+20+20+60=120
So you still get answer D
