14.40 is mutiple of 4.80 so answer is A

We should keep in mind that $14.40 is only a possibility. We do not know exactly how much money the lady spent. It could have been $14.40 or any other multiple of $4.80 depending on the values of x and y.

It's true. But this is not a data suficiency problem. If you choose E option: "None of these" you are asserting that none of the options is true. Can you assert that 14.40 is not the correct answer?. It can be the correct answer, so IMO I would choose A.

I will also go with E as we don't know how much exactly the lady has spent, any multiple of 4.80 will be the answer

A lady went to the market with a few one-rupee notes and a few 20-paise coins. When she returned, she had as many one-rupee notes as she originally had 20-paise coins and vice versa. She actually came back with about one-third of what she had gone with. How much did she spend in the market?

(A) 14.40
(B) 14.70
(C) 15.50
(D) 17.40
(E) None of these

Hi Bunuel

Can you please explain, if 1 option is satisfying in PS question, should we take that as an answer, even if there can be multiple answer of it ? How we can resolve these type of question if there is None of these as an option?

Thanks,
Vivek

Ok. I understand your confusion. See, when the say "how much DID she spend?", they are looking for a definitive answer, not a possibility. So we can only select an answer if that is the only answer, and nothing else can be the answer.

On the other hand, if the question was "how much COULD SHE HAVE spent?", then what you are saying would have been correct.

I hope it is clear.

Don't know how this question can be answered without knowing how many paise per rupee since the currency convention isn't stipulated in the question.

Not a good question.
