Derrick has a total of $13.75 in $0.25 coins and $1 bills. If Derrick has 5 more $0.25 coins than $1 bills, what is the sum of the number of $0.25 coins and the number of $1 bills that Derrick has?

A. 11
B. 15
C. 21
D. 25
E. 35

We can set up a couple of equations by translating the information given.

Let x = number of $0.25 coins and y= number of $1 bills

We are told that the total of the coins and bills is $13.75

(Eq. 1) 0.25x + y = 13.75

We also know that he has 5 more $0.25 coins than $1 bills.

(Eq. 2) x = y + 5

Plug equation 2 into the first to find a the value of either variable.

0.25(y +5) + y = 13.75
0.25y + 1.25 + y = 13.75
1.25y = 12.50 —> multiple by 100 to get rid of decimals.

125y = 1250
y = 10

From equation 2:
x = y + 5
x = 10 + 5
x = 15

Total sum of coins and bills:
15 + 10 = 25

IMO option D

I like the algebraic method a lot, but sometimes i have difficulty in translating the words into equations. Especially in the sentence "If Derrick has 5 more $0.25 coins than $1 bills". Can someone suggest a strategy to convert these statements into equations?

This is what i did:
Let 0.25 coins qty = x, and let $1 bills qty = y

0.25x + y = 13.75

So i put y = x + 5 since there are 5 more of the 0.25 coins. I didnt get the answer, but i want to understand the logic of why x = y + 5. I appreciate the help on this.
