The rectangular floor of a certain room has dimensions 30 feet by 20 feet. Which of the following is closest to the area of the floor, in square meters? (1 foot = 0.305 meter, rounded to the nearest thousandth.)

You are given 1 foot = 0.305 meter, rounded to the nearest thousandth. If you multiply \(30*20=600\) square feet by 0.305 meter, you're definitely getting it wrong.

Convert feet to meters and the multiply the two dimensions to get square meters.

Alternatively, multiply \(0.305^2\)to 600 square feet to convert it to square meters, whichever approach suits you!

Answer is A

Hope it helps!

I feel the easiest way is via approximation, first convert 30 feet to meters, don't take 0.305 instead take 0.3, 30 feet equals 9 meters, and likewise 20 feet equals 6 meters, and we get the answer as 54, which is closest to 56, and hence the answer is option A.

Since only approx. value is required and the answer choices are spaced wide
here's how i did it quickly -

Surface area of floor (in \( ft^2) = 30 * 20 = 600 ft^2\)

Conversion factor \( = 0.3 * 0.3 \approx{0.09} m^2/ft^2 \)

Surface area (in \( m^3) = 600 * 0.09 \approx{54} m^2 \)

Hence option A.
