If the question were to ask if the number of primates is reduced to 1/4 then it would have been:
(120/2400)*100= number of remaining primates
Right??

Of the 2,400 animals at the zoo, 1/4 are primates. If the number of primates were to be reduced by 1/4 , what percent of the remaining animals would then be primates?

A. 50%
B. 33 %
C. 25%
D. 20%
E. 6.25%

If the question were to ask if the number of primates is reduced to 1/4 then it would have been:
(120/2400)*100= number of remaining primates
Right??
No. In that case, the number of primates would be decreased from 2,400 * 1/4 = 600 primates to 600 * 1/4 = 150 primates, so by 450, making the number of animals in the zoo equal to 2,400 - 450 = 1,950. Thus, primates would account for 150/1,950 * 100 = 100/13 ≈ 8% of the remaining animals.

Hope it's clear.

Deconstructing the Question

Out of \(2400\) animals, \(\frac{1}{4}\) are primates.

The number of primates is reduced by \(\frac{1}{4}\).

We need the percent of primates in the new total.

Step-by-step

Initial primates are

\(\frac{1}{4} \cdot 2400 = 600\)

Reduction is

\(\frac{1}{4} \cdot 600 = 150\)

Remaining primates are

\(600 - 150 = 450\)

New total animals are

\(2400 - 150 = 2250\)

Percentage of primates is

\(\frac{450}{2250} = \frac{1}{5} = 20\%\)
