Two types of pipes, type A and type B, can be connected to a tank. Type A pipes are used as inlets, and type B pipes are used as outlets. If 5 pipes of type A and 3 pipes of type B are used, the tank fills up in 5 hours. The flow rate of type A pipes is 40% more than that of type B pipes. Which combination of pipes (number of Type A pipes as inlets and number of Type B pipes as outlets) is needed to fill up the tank in 4 hours?

Let the rate(per hr) of outlet pipe be -k , then rate of inlet pipe is 1.4k(Inlet pipe rate is 40% higher than outlet pipe).
(Note: Rate of inlet and outlet pipe will always be of opposite signs because one is filling the tank and other is removing water)
Total rate of 5 inlet and 3 outlet would then become equal to
5*(1.4k)-3*k=4k
Combined Rate is 4k and time taken is 5hr
Since Total work=RatexTime
Total work= 4k*5= 20k
Now, we need a combination which fill the tank in 4hr from the given options.
Rate required to fill it in 4 hrs= total work/Time
Rate required=20k/4=5k
From options, Option C is satisftying the given condition
10*(inlet) - 9*(outlet) = 10*1.4k - 9*k = 14k-9k=5k
Hence Option C is the correct answer.

Rate of A (Ra) = 1.4 Rate of B (Rb)
we know, the time taken is 5 hours to complete 1 piece of work
(5*Ra-3*Rb)*5 = 1
(5*(1.4Rb) - 3*Rb)*5 = 1
7Rb-3Rb=1/5
Hence, Rb = 1/20
and Ra = 1.4/20
Now,
The question says that the expected work should be done in 4 hours. So, I have again considered work done as 1
(x*(1.4/20) - y*(1/20))*4 = 1
x*(1.4/20) - y*(1/20) = 1/4
or
1.4x-y=(20/4)
1.4x-y=5
Only option (C) suffices this condition!
1.4*10-9=14-9=5
Hence, Option C is the answer!
