There are 7 executives, including the CEO and CFO, that are asked to form a small team of 5 members. However, the CEO and CFO may not both be assigned to the team. Given this constraint, how many ways are there to form the team?

A. 6
B. 10
C. 11
D. 21
E. 28

I did it using another approach but missed one case:

Case when CEO is there and CFO is not + Case when CFO is there but CEO is not + Case when both are not there

1x5C4 + 1X5C4 + 1

= 11

Hi PSKhore

The answer in this method will be Case when CEO is there and CFO is not + Case when CFO is there but CEO is not + Case when both are not there
1*5C4+1*5C4+5C5=5+5+1=11

But it is just said they may not be together so this doesnt make any sense. They might be together they might be separate and nothing else is given. We may have CEO + other 4 , we may have CFO + other 4 , we may have both CEO+CFO+other 3 , or even none of the CEO or CFO so all 5 from 7 except CEO and CFO. There are no restrictions on that. So its just simple case of selecting 5 out of 7 people. Please help

It's given in the question that it is a constraint - Given this constraint, how many ways are there to form the team?

I agree it is given, but 'what constraints the question is referring to is not clear... It just says A and B may not be together. so its not 100% confirm they are not together so how can we assume that A and B must not get selected. The issue is 'may not'. 'may not' doesnt mean they 'will not' be selected together. I am focusing on the words only

It means exactly that, out of all the possible ways, we have to find the ones with this constraint
