We can test answer choices in this scenario,

A. 20
First cross, fortune becomes 40, pays toll 40. Fox is bust in one cross => Incorrect

B. 30
First cross, fortune becomes 60, pays toll 40.
Has 20, Second cross, fortune becomes 40, pays toll 40. Fox is bust in two crosses => Incorrect

C. 35
First cross, fortune becomes 70, pays toll 40.
Has 30, Second cross, fortune becomes 60, pays toll 40.
Has 20, Third cross, fortune becomes 40, pays toll 40. Fox is bust in three crosses => Correct

Therefore, answer is option C. 35

I have one question. It is not given whether in the end he has left enough money to pay the fees or it became zero before that? If we consider 3 trips and 0 money before paying then answer will be 30. And que just says after doing 3 trips he realised he has no money so when did 'he realise'? After paying fees or before paying fees? How will we conclude this?

Lets say Fox started with \(x\) coins

First time it crosses the bridge it had \(2x-40\) coins

Second time it crosses, \(2*(2x-40)-40=4x-120\)

Third time it crosses, \(2*(4x-120)-40=8x-280\), it is left with no coins

\(8x-280=0\)

\(8x=280\)

\(x=35\)

Answer is C

It’s implied that it’s after paying the third toll, though it would have been better if the question stated that explicitly. However, notice tat everyone above interpreted the question in this intended way.
