John purchased some shirts and trousers for $600. He paid $100 less for the shirts than he did for the trousers. If he bought 5 shirts and the cost of a shirt is $20 less than that of a trouser, how many trousers did he buy?

He paid $100 less for the shirts than he did for the trousers:
Amount paid for shirts: \(\frac{(600-100)}{2} = 250\) and therefore the amount spent of trousers is: \(350\)
He bought 5 shirts and the cost of a shirt is $20 less than that of a trouser:
Price per shirt: \(\frac{250}{5}= 50\) which means that the price of a pair of trousers is: \(70\).
How many trousers did he buy:
\(\frac{350}{70}=5\)
ANSWER B

Let # of trousers be "t" and cost per trouser be "B"
Given
s*A + t*B = 600 ...............(1)
s*A = t*B - 100 .................(2)
s = 5; A = B - 20
We need to find "t"
5*(B-20) = t*B -100 ...............(subs. values in 2)
5*B = t*B
t = 5
Answer. B
