At the first stop we have 1/2 of the original population left

At the second stop we have 1/2-(1/2*1/2) = 1/4 people left

At the third stop we have 1/4-(1/2*1/4) = 1/8 people left

The questio stem also states that at the thirs stop 1 person droped, this means that

Where x = total population

1 = (1/8)x

= 8

Suppose half the people on a bus exit at each stop and no additional passengers board the bus. If on the third stop the next to last person exits the bus, then how many people were on the bus?

(A) 20
(B) 16
(C) 8
(D) 6
(E) 4

Wouldn't total be before the 1st stop?

Yes, that is what the solutions above assumes.

Initially, there were 8 people on the bus:

  • After the first stop: 4 people remain.
  • After the second stop: 2 people remain.
  • After the third stop: 1 person remains.

This matches the condition that the next-to-last person exits at the third stop.
