Hi!
I imagine you’ve finished your studies by now, but this is such a common challenge that it’s worth addressing!
Yes, the GMAT test writers really know how to design some “quicksand” questions. The first thing to keep in mind is that
no question is worth 10 minutes! In fact,
no question is worth more than 3:30. Part of what the GMAT tests is your executive decision-making. The Quant section intentionally presents you with a set of problems that will be extremely difficult to complete with perfect accuracy in the time allotted. Why? They want to see how you make choices under pressure!
It’s okay to miss hard questions on the GMAT Quant section. You can still get a great score! In fact, the most important thing is to maintain very high accuracy in easy to medium questions, since ultimately, it’s where you end up in the “mix” of difficulty that determines your GMAT score, not the number of questions you get right. So if you spend 10 minutes on a hard problem and get it right, but you miss four easier questions as a result, the GMAT will keep lowering the difficulty of your problems — and that will hurt your score worse than if you’d just completely guessed on the hard one!
That said, there’s still value in practicing hard questions in timed sets along with easy and medium ones.
What helped me a lot was “cycling up” through Official Guide problems — starting with easier problems in a given topic and working my way up to hard ones, with lots of deep review along the way. The hardest problems on the GMAT often aren’t testing more difficult math — they’re just disguising the same fundamental math better. Some solid, student friendly explanations can help you see how to “crack the code” on those tough problems and apply alternative strategies to solve them faster.
Ultimately, though, the key takeaway is that
the idea that you need to ace the hardest problems to get a high GMAT Quant score is a myth! Start by building your fundamentals and a solid timing strategy. You can check out

I’m curious — what other time management challenges have been sticking points for folks?
Happy studying!
