Hello Nitin
I know the answer is 80. I just wanted the person who posted the query to post the solution, especially to spot the gap and reply in terms of WHY the spider method is not advisable here. Thanks :)
nitin4gmat
80 kg seems to be right -
soln-
let the low quality sugar be x kg.
profit = 32(50+x) -(50*40 + 25x)
=1600 +32x -2000-25x
=7x-400
given in question profit = 160
so, 160= 7x-400
x=560/7=80 ans.

Hello Lisaxiao

Allegation (Spider Method) is just a different representation of weighted averages and is useful in situations where out of 4 quantities in the SPIDER - Low, High, Mean and Ratio of Mixing, 3 are already mentioned and 4th needs to be calculated.

In this question, the ratio of mixing is incomplete (quantity of low grade sugar is unknown) and Mean (Cost price of the mixture) is missing. It becomes difficult and in some cases impossible to use Allegation (Spider Method) to do such questions. Hence, it should be avoided and normal weighted averages should be used.

If you have fallen in love with the Spider method (Allegation) - Get out of it!
It is useful in specific situations and not for all kinds of interpretations.

Please note - the answer doesn't look like 80kg. Please check again.

Cheers!
