On 2 sales Tom has received commissions of x dollars and y dollars and has an additional sale pending. If Tom is to receive an average (arithmetic mean) commission of 2x + y on the 3 sales, then the final sale in terms of x and y must be

(x+y+3rd sales)/3=2x+Y
[Formula for arithematic mean]

solving the above, x+y+3rd sales=6x+3y
3rd sales=5x+2y

Mean he earned from 3 sales = 2x+y
Total he earned = 6x+3y
He has already earned from 1&2 sales =x+y
final sales=6x+3y-x-y
5x+2y (option E)
