The item costs s dollars.
Sales tax is 8% of s which is 0.08
so, the total amount = s+0.08s=1.08s

Which of the following represents the total dollar amount that a customer would have to pay for an item that costs s dollars plus a sales tax of 8 percent, in terms of s?

Total amount= s+(8/100)*s= (108/100)*s =1.08 s

Take for simplification S=100
Sales tax=8% of Rs 100= Rs 8
Total = Rs 108

Answer E satisfies the equation.
