From each of the two given numbers, half the smaller number is subtracted. Of the resulting numbers the larger one is three times as large as the smaller. What is the ratio of the two numbers?

A. 4 : 3
B. 3 : 2
C. 2 : 1
D. 3 : 1
E. 4 : 1

Let the two numbers be a & b respectively. Where a > b.

Subtract half of b = (b/2)

a - (b/2) = 3*(b - (b/2))

a - (b/2) = 3(b/2)

a = 3(b/2) + (b/2)

a = 2b

a : b = 2:1

Option C

let the numbers be X & y (where x>y)
now ATQ:
x-y/2=3(y-y/2)
x-y/2=3y/2
x=2y
x/y=2:1 (C)
