say initial rate = x
so total days =170/x

now for 4 days they went ahead with original rate.
so work done= 4x
now remaining work = 170-4x
new rate for rest of time = 2x

so days to finish the work = 170-4x / 2x

now total time taken = [(170-4x)/2x ] +4

we were told that they finished the job 8 days earlier.

[(170-4x)/2x ] +4 = (170/x) - 8
now when we solve we get x=8.5

option B

A team had to harvest 170 hectares of a field. For the first four days, the team harvested as per the original schedule. After that, they started harvesting double what was originally scheduled for every day. So, the work finished 8 days earlier than the scheduled date. How many hectares of land were originally scheduled to be harvested per day?

A. 9.0 hectares
B. 8.5 hectares
C. 7.0 hectares
D. 6.5 hectares
E. 5.0 hectares

When the team doubled its rate for a certain fraction of work, the time taken for that fraction became half. Since that fraction of work finished 8 days earlier, it means the work was scheduled to get done in 16 days and it actually took half the time i.e. 8 days.
So the entire work was scheduled to be done in 4 + 16 = 20 days (though it actually took just 4 + 8 = 12 days)
So originally 170/20 = 8.5 hectares were meant to be harvested every day.
