Evangelia bought a blouse originally priced at $60 for $42, and she also bought a pair of jeans. The average discount on the two items was 50%. If she had bought another identical pair of jeans, the average discount on all three items would have been 54%. How much did Evangelia save on the jeans?
Let the original price of a pair of jeans be p.
Let the amount by which the price of a pair of jeans is discounted be d.
First scenario, one blouse and one pair of jeans:
42 + (p - d) = 0.5(60 + p)
Second scenario, one blouse and two pairs of jeans:
42 + 2(p - d) = 0.46(60 + 2p)
Solve the system of equations to find the value of p:
84 + 2p - 2d = 60 + p (first equation multiplied by 2)
42 + 2p - 2d = 0.46(60) + 0.92p
42 = 0.54(60) + 0.08p (result of subtracting the second from twice the first)
9.6 = 0.08p
p = 120
Answer the question asked:
42 + (p - d) = 0.5(60 + p)
42 + (120 - d) = 0.5(60 + 120)
162 - d = 90
72 = d
