In the video from GMATNinja, in Step 3, how does he justify multiplying the 0.29 by 10 but NOT multiplying 0.74 by 10 at the same time? He goes on to multiply .74 by 100. This makes his math correct but it was confusing to me.

In the video from GMATNinja, in Step 3, how does he justify multiplying the 0.29 by 10 but NOT multiplying 0.74 by 10 at the same time? He goes on to multiply .74 by 100. This makes his math correct but it was confusing to me.

Basically, steps 2, 3, and 4 are just used to transform the decimals into integers. This could have been done in several ways.

One way is the method shown in the video solution. Another way would be to multiply 0.3 and 0.74 by 10 and 100, respectively, so by 1,000 overall. This would give 3 * 74 in the denominator.

Then, to balance this, we would also need to multiply 0.72 by 1,000, which would give 720. Thus, we would get the same expression:

720/(3 * 74)

Because the denominator is a product of two decimals.

If you multiply the whole fraction by 100/100, you get:

72/(100 * 0.3 * 0.74)

and the denominator becomes 0.3 * 74, not 30 * 74.

To change both 0.3 and 0.74 into 30 and 74, you are effectively multiplying the denominator by 10 * 100 = 1000. So you must multiply the numerator by 1000 as well.

That would give:

720/(30 * 74)

not 72/(30 * 74).
