Let x be the total amount and y the average salary after two employees left the company.

(1) \(\frac{x}{182} = 56,000\): average salary of all the employees

(2) \(\frac{x-53,000-104,000}{180} = y\): average salary after two employees left the company

From equation (1) we can find: \(x = 56,000*182\).

The expression of x can be substituted in fraction (2): \(\frac{56,000*182-53,000-104,000}{180} = y \)

\(y = 55,750\)


Answer: D

1. The two departing employees have an average salary of

\(\frac{53{,}000+104{,}000}{2}=78{,}500.\)

2. Their average salary is

\(78{,}500-56{,}000=22{,}500\) above the company’s average.

3. Since 2 employees leave and 180 remain, there are\(\frac{180}{2}=90\) remaining employees for each departing employee.

4. Therefore, the average salary of the remaining employees decreases by

\(\frac{22{,}500}{90}=250.\)

5. The new average salary is

\(56{,}000-250=\boxed{55{,}750}.\)

That is what I did, very traditional way. I think kevincan provides a great approach to answer this quesiton within 30 seconds
