1296 is a multiple of 4 (because 96 is a multiple of 4) and of 9 ( because 1+2+9+6 is a multiple of 9) and thus of 36

1296/36 =36

Thus 1296 = 2^4 * 3^4

1296 has (4+1)*(4+1) =25 positive divisors

Think of them in pairs :

1 * 1296
2* 648
Etc
36*36

There are (25-1)/2 =12 pairs of distinct divisors, but as we are told that the two distinct divisors are both greater than 1 , there are 11 possible values of the larger integer .
