The positive integer x has a factor of 16. If the square root of x is > 16, which of the following could equal x/16?

A. 13
B. 14
C. 15
D. 16
E. 17

Since √x > 16, then x > 16^2, or x > 256. So, x/16 > 256/16 or x/16 > 16. The only value in the answer choices that satisfies this condition is 17. In other words, x = 16 * 17 = 272, so x/16 = 17.

Solution:

Since it is given that square root of x is greater than 16 we have √x > 16,

=> x > 16^2

Since x is a positive integer and 16 is positive the inequality will not change sign when we divide it by 16 on both sides

=> x/16 > 16

So the value of x/16 from among the choices that satisfies it is 17(option e)
