If it takes a tub 3 minutes to drain 5/7 of its content, how much more time will it take for the tub to be empty?

A. 48 seconds
B. 1 minute, 12 seconds
C. 1 minute, 50 seconds
D. 2 minutes, 14 seconds
E. 4 minutes, 12 seconds

let t=additional time needed
(5/7)/3=(2/7)/t
t=6/5 minutes=1 minute, 12 seconds
B

Lets take LCM of 5,3,2,7 = 210. Lets say tub holds 210 units of water.

5/7 of tub = 5/7 * 210 = 150 units. 150 units drained in 3 minutes. So capacity = 150/3 = 50 units per minute

To drain remaining 2/7 * 210 = 60 units, time taken = 60/50 minutes = 6/5 minutes = 1 1/5 = 1 minute 12 seconds

Hence B answer

Since the tub takes 3 mins to drain 5/7th of the content,
it will take about 36 seconds(180 seconds/5) to drain exactly 1/7th of the content.

Hence, it will take 1 minute and 12 seconds to drain the additional 2/7th of the content(Option B)

If it takes a tub 3 minutes to drain 5/7 of its content, how much more time will it take for the tub to be empty?

A. 48 seconds
B. 1 minute, 12 seconds
C. 1 minute, 50 seconds
D. 2 minutes, 14 seconds
E. 4 minutes, 12 seconds

Since 5/7 of the tub drains in 3 minutes, we need to determine how long it will take to empty 2/7 of its content. We can create a proportion in which x = the amount of time it takes to empty 2/7 of the tub:

3/(5/7) = x/(2/7)

6/7 = 5x/7

42 = 35x

42/35 = x

6/5 = x

1 ⅕ minutes = 1 minute and 12 seconds = x
