The range of a set is the difference between the largest and smallest elements of a set.

(1) If a range of a subset is more than 5 then the range of entire set is also more than 5. Consider this: we are told that the range of any 3 numbers in S is > 5, so the range of a subset which includes the largest and smallest elements of a set is also more than 5. Sufficient.

(2) Suppose the numbers ordered in ascending order are: w , x , y, z. As the positive difference between any two numbers inset S is > 3, then z-y>3 and y-w>3 --> z-w>6, so the range is already more than 6. Sufficient.

Answer: D.

1 - the range of any 3 numbers in S is > 5
Assuming 3 numbers as A, B, & C .......... if C-A > 5 ............no need to check anything else ........ the range for the set is >5 SUFFICIENT

2 - The positive difference between any two numbers inset S is > 3
If lA-Bl>3 ...... then lB-Cl>3 ............... if A&C are on the same side of B ...... then there own difference has to be more than 3 making the range of A,B & C more than 6 ............... and if they are on the opp side of B, then the range of A, B & C again is more than 6. SUFFICIENT

This tells us at minimum the range of S is > 5 and less than some upper bound (which we don't need to know)
Sufficient

(2) The positive difference between any two numbers inset S is > 3
Same as St1
Sufficient.
