Is x negative?

(1) y + x = -22. Clearly insufficient: the sum of two numbers is negative: either both are negative or just one of them, but we don't know which one, since no info about y.

(2) y – x < -22. Also insufficient: no info about y.

(1)+(2) Substitute \(y=-x-22\) from (1) into (2): \((-x-22)-x<-22\) --> rearrange and cancel -22 on both sides: \(2x>0\) --> \(x>0\), hence the answer to the question whether \(x\) negative is NO. Sufficient.

Answer: C.

Statement 1) x depends on y and value of y is not specified -> So Insufficient.
Statement 2) x depends on y and value of y is not specified -> So Insufficient

Adding both the equations
2y < -44 => y < -22

As per the 1st equation, x > 0 to make the equation correct.
Sufficient.

Lets say x was 0.
y - 0 = -22
y - 0 < -22?
For y to be less than -22, x has to be > 0. SUFFICIENT.

Answer is C.

I am confused here. Can we add the two like this? One is equation and second is inequality.
