What is the value of w + q ?

(1) 3w=3-3q. Rearrange and reduce by 3: w+q=1. Sufficient.
(2) 5w +5q = 5. Reduce by 5: w+q=1. Sufficient.

When the question is "what is w + q" then we don't need to solve for TWO unknowns, all that's needed is one known, w + q can still be calculated, even if you don't know their respective value.

Both statements give us one known and (w, q) as unknown, so both of the statments are sufficent to answer the question.

This takes about 15-20 seconds to determine, instead of calculating and solving, just determine what you need quickly and then conclude if the statments are enough.

EDIT: Notice that above reasoning ONLY works if you can get w and q as addition or subtraction, Im not as sure this works if they are given as fractions or products.

What is the value of w + q ?

(1) 3w=3-3q
(2) 5w +5q = 5

We need to determine the sum of w and q.

Statement One Alone:

3w = 3 - 3q

Dividing the entire equation by 3 we have:

w = 1 - q

w + q = 1

Statement one alone is sufficient to answer the question.

Statement Two Alone:

5w + 5q = 5

Dividing the equation by 5 we have:

w + q = 1

Statement two alone is sufficient to answer the question.
