(1) Of the amount awarded, 50 percent was given to the recipient immediately.
(2) Of the amount awarded, $75,000 was to be given to the recipient upon completion of research.

Neither statement is sufficient alone. Together, perhaps half the money was given immediately, and half at the end, and the total amount was $150,000. But it also could be that, say, half the money was given immediately, a quarter of the money was given halfway through the research, and the remaining quarter was given at the end, and the total was $300,000. Of course there are many other possibilities, so the answer is E.

(2) Of the amount awarded, $75,000 was to be given to the recipient upon completion of research. -  Insufficient since we do not what is the percent equivalent of $75,000

Both Combined-   This is tricky as many will think that because 50% of the grant was paid at the beginning, the remaining 50% will be paid upon the completion of research. 
Pause for a sec, do we REALLY know the remaining 50% was paid in 1 installment at the end ---> No we don't because the remaining 50% of the grant can be paid in "n" installments.
20% in middle
30% at the end.
In both of the above mentioned cases, the total amount of the grant will be different.  Thus Insufficient

So the answer is E.

OA has to be E. I am increasingly seeing such CR based assumption trap Quant question. Interesting shift. I also saw a similar style question on speed time and distance.

50 % was given immediately doesn't mean that the other 50% would be given after completion of research. Big assumption here.

Statement 1 gives us only the percent of amount but not the quantity or amount itself so clearly insufficient
Statement 2 tells us that $75,000 was to be given to the recipient upon completion of research. This doesn't tell us anything more because we don't know how much percent of total does the $ 75000 represent so insufficient

Combining both statements we would be tempted to think that if 50 % is paid immediately and $75000 is paid at the end then $75000 would represent the remaining 50 % . But it is not such a case we don't know if researcher was paid any money in between the research and whether $ 75000 is 50 % of total amount or even less than that So insufficient
