Last week, Raina and Bob made a combined total of 190 sales at a computer store. Raina made how many more sales than Bob?

(1) The difference between the number of sales Raina made and the number of sales Bob made was ten percent of the number of sales Raina made.

(2) Bob made 9/19 of the total number of sales made by himself and Raina.

VERITAS PREP OFFICIAL SOLUTION:

Statement 1: Let R be the number of sales Raina made, and B be the number of sales Bob made.

Your goal is to define the following:

Raina made how many more sales than Bob = R – B = ?

And you know from the question that:

Total number of sales by Raina and Bob = R + B = 190

From Statement 1 you learn:

R - B = 0.1R

With the two equations, it is possible to solve for R and B and determine R - B:

R + B = 190

R - B = 0.1R, so combine the two equations to get:

2R = 190 + 0.1R

1.9R = 190

So R = 100 and B = 90, meaning that R - B = 10.

SUFFICIENT

2) Statement 2 can be translated into:

B = (9/19)(B + R)

And since you know that B + R = 190 you have:

B = (9/19)(190)

So, again, B = 90 and R = 100, so R - B = 10.

Dear Bunuel,
Kindly review the solution,

Given , Let Raina sales = x & Bob sales = y
x+y = 190 ; x=?

St1: x-y= 0.10 * x
=> x - 0.10x = y
=> 0.9x = y
=> x = 10*y/9 => 0.9x+x=190 => 1.9x = 190 => x = 190/1.9 => x = 100
Suff.

St2: y = 9(x+y)/19
y = 9*190 /19 = 90
x=100
Suff
