In a certain factory, hours worked by each employee in excess of 40 hours per week are overtime hours and are paid for at \(1\frac{1}{2}\) times the employee’s regular hourly pay rate. If an employee worked a total of 42 hours last week, how much was the employee’s gross pay for the hours worked last week?

(1) The employee’s gross pay for overtime hours worked last week was $30.
(2) The employee’s gross pay for all hours worked last week was $30 more than for the previous week

(1) Let regular payment is $x per hour

Gross overtime \(=1.5x(42-40)=$30\); Sufficient

(2) No information for the previous week or last week's pay is given. Insufficient.

The answer is A

In a certain factory, hours worked by each employee in excess of 40 hours per week are overtime hours and are paid for at \(1\frac{1}{2}\) times the employee’s regular hourly pay rate. If an employee worked a total of 42 hours last week, how much was the employee’s gross pay for the hours worked last week?

(1) The employee’s gross pay for overtime hours worked last week was $30.
(2) The employee’s gross pay for all hours worked last week was $30 more than for the previous week
Solution:

We need to determine the employee’s gross pay for the hours worked last week. If we let x be the regular hourly rate, then 1.5x will be the overtime hourly rate. Since the employee worked 42 hours last week, his or her gross pay for last week, in term of x, will be:

40x + 2(1.5x) = 40x + 3x = 43x

Therefore, if we can determine the value of x, we can determine the employee’s gross pay last week. Also, notice that 40x is his or her gross pay for the regular 40 hours and 3x is the employee’s gross pay for the overtime of 2 hours.

Statement One Alone:

We can create the equation:

3x = 30

x = 10

Therefore, the employee’s gross pay last week was 43(10) = $430. Statement one alone is sufficient.

Statement Two Alone:

This does not allow us to determine the employee’s gross pay last week since we don’t know the number of hours he or she worked the week before last week. Statement two alone is not sufficient.

So from I) We can deduce that the money earned by the worker for working two overtime hours is 30$
So 30 = 1.5x where x is the normal hourly rate
We do not need to find the x fir this question only getting till here is enough to know that we can calculate the gross pay last week
From ii) We do not know how many hours the worker worked last week thus we can not find the value of hourly wage thus gross is also not possible.

Therefore ans is option A
