Carol and Joe went apple picking. Who picked more apples?

(1) Joe picked 3/4 as many apples as Carol did.
(2) After Carol stopped picking apples, Joe continued to pick apples until he had picked 15 apples.

The answer is A, and this answer is valid only if Carol and Joe picked at least one apple. If both of them picked none, then (1) is insufficient.

Carol and Joe went apple picking. Who picked more apples?

(1) Joe picked 3/4 as many apples as Carol did.
(2) After Carol stopped picking apples, Joe continued to pick apples until he had picked 15 apples.

We need to determine whether Carol picked more apples than Joe.

Statement One Alone:

Joe picked 3/4 as many apples as Carol did.

Since Joe picked 3/4 as many apples as Carol, Joe picked fewer apples than Carol. So Carol is the one who picked more apples. Statement one is sufficient to answer the question.

Statement Two Alone:

After Carol stopped picking apples, Joe continued to pick apples until he had picked 15 apples.

Since we don’t know how many apples Carol or Joe picked, we cannot determine who picked more apples. Statement two alone is not sufficient to answer the question.

Answer: A
