What was the average number of miles per gallon of gasoline consumed by Lorena's car during a certain trip?

(1) The car uses on average a gallon of gasoline for 18 miles driven
(2) The cost of the gasoline used by the car for the trip was $24

To calculate the average miles per gallon we need to know the amount of miles driven and the amount of gallons consumed.
We'll look for statements that give us this information, a Logical approach.

(1) does not give us the total number of miles driven or gallons used on Lorena's trip.
Insufficient.

(2) does not give us the miles driven or the amount of gallons used on Lorena's trip.
Insufficient.

Combined: Since there is no way to combine the information in the statements, we still cannot answer.

(E) is our answer.

It is given that car drove 18miles on a gallon of gasoline. Then , why can't we assume that the total distance was 18 miles and a gallon was consumed in the trip.

Hey xvijaykumar ,

No, that is not correct. If I am saying the speed of my car is 60 km/hour. That doesn't mean I am travelling only 60 Kms or only for one hour. I could travel 100s of hours with that speed.

Similarly, 1 gallon is what it takes for 18 miles. That doesn't mean I am travelling only 18 miles.

Does that make sense?

Hello

It is NOT given that 'car drove 18 miles on a gallon of gasoline'. Rather what is given is that 'car uses on average a gallon of gasoline for 18 miles driven'. But we don't know how many miles Lorena drove on this particular trip.

In statement 1, it is given that in average it runs 18 miles per gallon. The same thing has been asked in the question. Why A is wrong?
