On the gmat I have never come across a question,which gives a diagram as a statement to solve ( unless it has values)

Is this a GMAT standard question?

edit might be c/e .. more inclined towards E ( but c may be)

I too think that the answer is E

Since they didn't give the measurement of the piece that was cut. They just gave the area.

We dont know the length and width of given rectangular carpet of 200 square yards area. Its possible that this carpet is 20 yards by 10 yards OR 40 yards by 5 yards or something else.


Statement 1
Area of remaining piece = 120 square yards. But we dont know which shape that remaining piece is in and with what dimensions.

Eg., if we take a case where remaining piece is a rectangle of 12 yards by 10 yards, then its perimeter will be = 2*(10+12) = 44 yards
But if the remaining piece is a rectangle of 15 yards by 8 yards, then its perimeter will be = 2*(15+8) = 46 yards
So this statement is not sufficient to answer the question.


Statement 2
I have tried to explain the statement 2 by means of a pic, which is attached here. Perimeter is the sum of all sides.

I have assumed the three non-measured horizontal lines to be 'x', 'y' and 'z' while I have assumed the three non-measured vertical lines to be 'a', 'b' and 'c'. (other sides are already measured/marked as 10 yards and 20 yards)

As we can see, x+y+z will add up to 20 yards only, and a+b+c will add up to 10 yards only: this is because all lines are perpendicular to each other.

So we have the perimeter as 10+20+10+20 = 60 yards. Sufficient.


Hence B answer

i think answer is B from diagram we can conclude that we can find the perimeter as it is sum of all the sides.
