Why does statement two mean that the two lower triangles have the same area?
Because F is the mid point of CD and height is same for both the lower triangles.

In the figure, if the area of triangle DFE is 10 units, what is the area of triangle ABC?

A. AB || DE

B. F is the mid-point of CD and C is the mid point of BF.

Nothing much in main statement, so let's start with statement I ..
A. AB||DE..
This tells us that ABC and DCE are SIMILAR triangles
So their sides are in same RATIO..but nothing more
Insufficient
B. F is the mid-point of CD and C is the mid point of BF
This tells us that area of DEF is equal to ares of CEF or area of DCE is 2*10=20..
But nothing about ABC
Insufficient

Combined..
ABC and CDE are similar triangles.
Since C is the midpoint of BF we can find ratio of sides CB and CD..
If DF is x, cF=BC=X
So BC:CD=1:2

In similar triangles, ratio of area is square of ratio of sides.
So 1:4 so 5:20
Area is 5
Sufficient

The question stated that the area of triangle DFE is 10 units, but you seem to be solving for ABC based on triangle CDE?

The ratio of DF to BC is 1:1

With this information, plus the information that AB||DE, would this not mean that the area of ABC is the same as the area of DFE (10)?

Bunuel can you please explain how triangles are similar?

If sides are parallel, does that mean triangles are always similar?
