i think this question is a bit confused, the questions doesn't explicitly state if we have to figure the median number or the elements. In other words to say if is asking about which element then option A is insufficient, vice versa. So yeah I wouldn't blame anyone who fault on this due to the confusion the author made.

If the average (arithmetic mean) of the three different positive integers x,y and z is 3, what is the median of the three integers?

(1) x=5
(2) y=3

Lets look at this:

(x + y + z) / 3 = 3
X + y + z = 9

Statement 1:
X = 5 --------- y + z = 4
Case 1 ------ if x = 5 then y =1 and z = 3 ---- median 3
Case 2 ---- if x = 5 then y = 3 and z = 1 -----median 3
We can not have y = z = 2 since these are diff integers
SUFFICIENT

Statement 2:
Y = 3 ------ x + z = 6
Case 1: if y = 3 then x = 1 and z = 5 -------- median = 3
Case 2 : if y = 3 then x = 2 and z = 4 -------- median 3
Case 3: if y = 3 then x = 4 and z = 2 ----- median 3
And so on
You can not have x = z = 3 since they are diff integers
SIFFICIENT

Answer – D
