Solution
To find:
- • The median number of theatre tickets sold in a day over the past 7 days
Analysing Statement 1
“The theatre sold 75, 86, 46 and 86 tickets on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday respectively”
- • Let us assume that the number of tickets sold on Friday, Saturday and Sunday be a, b and c respectively.
• The median value is the 4th number in the increasing/decreasing order of numbers
Since, we do not know the values of a, b and c, we cannot find the 4th number in the sequence
Therefore, statement 1 is not sufficient
Analysing Statement 2
“The theatre sold 68, 86 and x tickets on Friday, Saturday and Sunday respectively”
- • Since, we do not know the number of tickets sold on rest of the days of the week, we cannot find the 4th number in the sequence
Therefore, statement 2 is not sufficient
Combining Both Statements
Combining both we get,
- • The number of tickets sold on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday are 75, 86, 46, 86, 68, 86 and x respectively.
• Arranging the known values in increasing order, we get, 46, 68, 75, 86, 86, 86
- o Now, if x lies between 75 and 86 then the median value is x
o If x ≥ 86, then the median value is 86
o If x ≤ 75, then the median value is 75
We are given that x ≥ 40, which implies that the median can be any value from 75 to 86
Therefore, both statements together are not sufficient
Hence, the correct answer is Option E.
