If x is a positive integer less than 10, and x + 2 is a prime number, what is the value of x ?

(1) x + 3 is the square of an integer.
(2) x + 7 is the cube of an integer.

If x < 10 then x may be 9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1

1) x + 3 is the square of an integer
Two values of x satisfies the conditions
x= 1 & 6 , x +2 = 4 & 9
not sufficient
2) x+ 7 is the cube of an integer

only one value satisfies the condition
x = 1
Sufficient

Will go with option B

Thanks[/quote]

sonusaini1 : hi question says that "If x is a positive integer less than 10, and x + 2 is a prime number"

quoting your line:
1) x + 3 is the square of an integer
Two values of x satisfies the conditions
x= 1 & 6 , x +2 = 4 & 9
not sufficient

how can x be 6 ? as per question stem x+2 has to be prime so in this case 6+2 = 8 which is not prime..

X<10
X+2 is prime

1) X+3 is square of an integer

1^2=1 --> 1+3=4 or 2^2; 1+2=3, prime - this works

2^2 = 4 --> 2+3=5; doesn't work

3^2 = 9 --> 3+3=6; doesn't work

Answer is either A or D. Eliminate answer choice B, C, and E.

2) X+7 is cube of integer

1^3=1--> 1+7=8 or 2^3... 1+2=3 and prime; works

2^3=8--> 2+7=9; doesn't work

3^3=27--> doesn't work

Answer choice D. Each statement alone is sufficient.
