Blocks of Type A are 4 inches tall per block, while those of Type B are 5 inches tall per block. If 12 blocks are stacked on each other, a of Type A and b of Type B, into a single column, is a > b ?

(1) b > 5

(2) The height of the column is less than 56 inches.

Solution:

Statement 1:

Possible values b = 6 and a = 6 so a is not greater than b
Or
b can be more than 6 so a will be less than b

In all cases a is not greater than b, Sufficient

Statement 2:

As given 4a + 5b < 56 (Eq. 1)

Also given a + b = 12
Multiply both sides by 4, we get 4a + 4b = 48 (Eq. 2)

Subtract Eq. 2 from Eq. 1, we get b < 8,

One possibility b can be 7 and a will be 5, in this case answer is yes (a is greater than b)

Another possibility b can be 1 and a will be 11, in this case answer is no (a is not greater than b)

Not Sufficient

Correct answer is A.
