Step 1- Given and To find

Given
    • Team X won 40 basketball games

To find
    • The percent of basketball games win by Team X.

To find the percent of basketball games won by team X, we need to have:
    • Total basketball games played by team X = Need to find
    • Total basketball games won by team X = 40.

Step 2: Analysing individual statements

Statement 1: Team X played the same number of basketball games as Team Y.
    • Total basketball games played by team X = Total basketball games played by team Y
However, it does not give the number of basketball games played by team X.

Statement 2: Team Y won 45 games, representing 2.5 percent of the basketball games it played.
    • 2.5% of the basketball games played by team Y = 45
    • So, we can find total basketball games played by team Y.
However, it does not give the number of basketball games played by team X.

We can not find answer using individual statements. Let’s combine both the statements.

Step 3: Combining both the statements

From statement 1:
    • Total basketball games played by team X = Total basketball games played by team Y
From statement 2:
    • We can find total basketball games played by team Y.

So, we can find total basketball games played by team X.

Hence, option C is the correct answer.
Correct Answer: Option C

Team X won 40 basketball games. What percent of its basketball games did Team X win?

(1) Team X played the same number of basketball games as Team Y.
(2) Team Y won 45 games, representing 2.5 percent of the basketball games it played.

Given: Team X won 40 basketball games.

Asked: What percent of its basketball games did Team X win?

(1) Team X played the same number of basketball games as Team Y.
Let us assume Games team X played = Games team Y played = x
% game Team X won = 40 / 2x = (2000/x)%
Since x is unknown
NOT SUFFICIENT

(2) Team Y won 45 games, representing 2.5 percent of the basketball games it played.
Team Y played = 45 / 2.5% = 4500/2.5 = 1800 games
% games Team X won = (4000 / Games Team X played + Games Team Y played)%
There is no information about games Team X played
NOT SUFFICIENT

(1) + (2)
(1) Team X played the same number of basketball games as Team Y.
Let us assume Games team X played = Games team Y played = x
% game Team X won = 40 / 2x = (2000/x)%
(2) Team Y won 45 games, representing 2.5 percent of the basketball games it played.
Team Y played = 45 / 2.5% = 4500/2.5 = 1800 games
% games Team X won = 4000 / (1800 + 1800) % = 1 1/9 %
SUFFICIENT
