The question stem tells us that the tuition fees of A increased by 25% in four years to $100,000 in the year 2012. Therefore, the tuition fees of A was 100,000/1.25 = $80,000 in 2008.
Statement 1 tells us that the tuition fees of A in 2008 was 2.5 times the tuition fees of B. Therefore, the tuition fees of B was 80,000/2.5 = $32,000. In order to calculate the percentage increase for B, we need to know B's tuition fee in 2012. Statement 1 only allows us to find the B's tuition fee for the year 2008. Therefore 1 is not sufficient.
Statement 2 tells us that the tuition fees of A was $30,000 more than the tuition fees of B.
Therefore A (2012)= B(2012)+$30,000
$100,000 = B(2012) + $30,000
Therefore, B(2012) = $100,000-$30,000=$70,000.
Statement 2 allows us to calculate B's tuition fee for 2012 but does not provide any information about 2012. Therefore, 2 is not sufficient.
