What percentage of a group of people are men with MBA degrees?
(1) Of all the men in the group, 25% have MBA degrees.
(2) Of all the women in the group, 30% have MBA degrees.
For whatever reason, when it comes to overlapping sets in DS, the GMAT loves to start their statements with the word “of”. This is so common it’s worth memorizing how to deal with such statements.
Rephrasing statement (1): 25% OF all the men in the group have MBA degrees.
This tells us nothing about the total number of men in the group, so insufficient.
Rephrasing statement (2): 30% OF all the women in the group have MBA degrees.
This not only tells us nothing about the total number of women in the group, but also nothing about the total number of men in the group, so insufficient.
Combining the statements, we still don’t know enough about the number of men and the number of women. So answer E.
…………….
The “pure” math:
Men-noM + Men-M + Women-noM + Women-M = 100
Q: (Men-M)/100 = ?
(1) .25(Men-noM + Men-M) = Men-M
Men-M = (Men-NoM)/.75
Not sufficient
(2) .30(Women-no M + Women-M) = Women-M
Women-M = (Women-noM) = (Women-no M)/.7
Not sufficient
Men-NoM + (Men-NoM)/.75 + Women-noM + (Women-noM)/.7 = 100
(7/3)(Men-noM) + (17/7)(Women-noM) = 100
Two variables, one equation. Can’t solve for single value, so not sufficient. Answer: E
