Four lectures Arithmetic, Biology, Chemistry and Dermatology were scheduled, one on each day on four consecutive days, but not necessarily in that order. On which day was Chemistry scheduled?
(1) The first lecture was scheduled on Monday, 14thJanuary 2016 and was followed by Dermatology.
(2) Arithmetic was not scheduled on 16th January 2016 and there was a gap of one day between Arithmetic and biology.
(1) The first lecture was scheduled on Monday, 14thJanuary 2016 and was followed by Dermatology:
Chem. could have been on the third or on the fourth day :
INSUFF. (2) Arithmetic was not scheduled on 16th January 2016 and there was a gap of one day between Arithmetic and biology:
Among many other things we do not know when was the first of four consecutive days , hence we cannot speculate on which day was Chem.
INSUFF. \(1+2\)We know the four consecutive days were : \(14 , 15, 16\) and \(17\)
We also know Dermatology was the second lecture
arithmetic cannot be on the \(16\) already given.
Arithmetic also cannot be on the \(15 \) as dermatology is the second lecture.
Also there was a gap of one day between Arithmetic and Biology.
So
\(14\hspace{2mm} 15 \hspace{2mm}16 \hspace{2mm}17\)
A \(\hspace{4mm} \) D\(\hspace{4mm}\) B\(\hspace{4mm}\) C
B \(\hspace{4mm} \) D\(\hspace{4mm}\) A\(\hspace{4mm}\) C
These are the only two scenarios poss.
In each case we see Chem. can only be on the fourth day, i.e. \(17^{th}\)

Hope it's clear.
