In a Physics quiz, three teams X, Y, and Z participated. Each team had 8 members.

8 problems were assigned to each of the 24 participants. Each participant was required to solve each of the 8 problems. If any participant’s answers to 3 of the problems were correct, that participant would win a gold medal. Did any member of team X win a gold medal?

(1) The total number of correct answers of the 24 participants was 55.

(2) The total number of correct answers of the members of Team X was at least 7.

Statement 1:

We could put all the correct answers in team Y or Z, with Team X having no correct answers or vice versa. Insufficient.

Statement 2:

Team X has 8 people, we may have each person answering 1 or fewer answers correct or one person answering all 7. Insufficient.

Combined:

The two scenarios in statement 2 can still hold. Insufficient.

Ans: E

Note, however, with combined statements we can infer Team Y or Team Z must have at least one gold medal winner.
