The cost of production of a certain instrument increases with the number of units produced. What is the cost of production for 270 units?

(1) The cost of production for 300 units is $300.
300 units = $300
1 unit = 300/300 = $1
270 units = $270
Sufficient.

(2) The cost of production is directly proportional to the number of units produced.
Does not provide us with any values
Not sufficient.

IMO A

You have assumed direct causality between the costs and the no. of units. Whereas stimulus has explicitly stated that The cost of production of a certain instrument increases with the number of units produced. So the relationship is not exactly one to one.
Thus, A alone can not give the correct answer.

(1) The cost of production for 300 units is $300.
The question says the cost increases with the increase in a unit of production.
But we need an equation to determine whether 270 units will cost 270$.
(Not sufficient)

(2) The cost of production is directly proportional to the number of units produced.
No value is given to determine the cost of production of 270 units (Not Sufficient)

Combining both.
Cost of production and units are directly proportional and 300 units cost 300$ hence the cost of production of 270 units = 270$

Answer is C

Q. Stem inference & Question:
The cost of production is directly proportional to the number of units produced.
What is the cost of production for 270 units?
St(1): The cost of production for 300 units is $300
Since, cost of production is directly proportional to the number of units produced, cost of 1 unit = $1
and hence 270 units = $270
Sufficient. Eliminate B,C,E.
St(2):The cost of production is directly proportional to the number of units produced.
There is no information to compute the price. Insufficient. Eliminate D.
(option a)
D.S
GMAT SME

I think there is a gap in your logic. Stem does not say that the relationship between the costs and the units is of direct proportionality. That bit of information is provided by the second statement. And we need that to reach to our conclusion. Thus, option C is the correct choice as it confirms that the proportionality is direct. If we apply this to statement 1, we get our proportionality constant as 1. And from this we can get the cost of 270 units.

Hi !
