Number of PetsNumber of People
04
15
26
A7
5B

The table above shows the numbers of pets owned by the respondents to a survey where A>2. What was the median number of pets owned by the people surveyed?

(1) A=3
(2) B=2

Number of Pets Number of People
0 4
1 5
2 6
A 7
5 B

No. of pets owned = 4 * 0 , 5 * 1 , 6 * 2 , 7 * A , B * 5 . Arranging it in increasing terms-

0, 5, 12 , 7A, 5 B ( Not sure of last 2 terms, it can be lie in between or be at extremes.

Statement 1 - A = 3, 7 * A will be 21. Median will depend on value of 5*B. If B is greater than 2 , median will be 12 but if B is 2, median will be 5*B
Not sufficient

Statement 2, B = 2, A >2, 7 * A will be 21 or greater. Median will be 5 * B or 10
Sufficient

Option B
Abhishekgmat87 - My contention to your solution is you are bucketing these values (number of pets owned) as per the original bucketing, i.e. total number of people who responded.

which means, according to statement 2, your set becomes - 0,5,10, 12, 7A

I had a different approach. i.e. lay out all the number of pets in the set and frequency of each "no of pet" is determined by the number of people responded.

Hence, my set becomes- { 0,0,0,0,1,1,1,1,1,2,2,2,2,2,2, [A] 7 times, [5] B times}

St1 - A=3, but I don't know B, hence I dont know the total number of terms in this set - Insufficient

St 2 - B =2 - {0,0,0,0,1,1,1,1,1,2,2,2,2,2,2,5,5, [A] 7 times}. - Insufficient

Combine both the statements, and I got my set and hence the values. Hence C

However, I know that's not correct. I want to understand where I went wrong (in terms of translating the problem)

Can you please share your thoughts?
