(1) - Insufficient. We don't know David's speed in the first 15 miles.

(2) - Insufficient. This does give us John's speed for the first 15 miles aka David's speed for the first 17 miles, but no info on the last 13 miles.

(1) and (2) - Insufficient.

We now know David's speed for the first 17 miles and last 15 miles, but without any info on what his speed was in the 2 mile stretch from start of 16th mile to end of 17th mile, we will not be able to determine his overall average speed.

Thus, answer is E.

Is it C since we weren't given that each was traveling at a constant speed?
Hi IVYsaurBRIDGE

The answer is E

On combining statements 1 & 2

we have that David covered 17 miles in 45 minutes (from Statement B & Question)

Also, from Statement A we have 15 miles covered in 40 minutes

So there is an overlap, otherwise he would have covered 32 miles (but the disatance is 30 miles)

Total time taken must be = 45+40 - common part (which cannot be just limited since he might have taken more time for those 2 miles & lesser time for rest 13)

So the answer is E
