How many television sets did a certain electronics store sell on Tuesday?

(1) The number of television sets sold on Tuesday was 5 fewer than twice the number sold on Monday.
(2) The number of television sets sold on Monday was 4 fewer than the number sold on Tuesday.
Solution:
Pre Analysis:
  • Let the number of TVs sold on Tuesday be \(T\)
  • We area sked the value of this \(T\)

Statement 1: The number of television sets sold on Tuesday was 5 fewer than twice the number sold on Monday
  • According to this statement, \(T=2M-5\)
  • However, we don't know the value of M
  • Thus, statement 1 alone is not sufficient and we can eliminate options A and D

Statement 2: The number of television sets sold on Monday was 4 fewer than the number sold on Tuesday
  • According to this statement, \(M=T-4\)
  • However, we don't know the value of M
  • Thus, statement 2 alone is also not sufficient and we can eliminate option B

Combining:
  • From statement 1, \(T=2M-5\)
  • From statement 2, \(M=T-4\)
  • Now we can solve them and get the value of T

Hence the right answer is Option C
