Sharing some thoughts on this question (since no one has answered yet  )

Statement 1

(1) Shaneice averaged 80 kilometers per hour during the first 3 hours of driving from City X to City Y.

We can infer that Shaneice traveled a total of 240 kilometers during the first 3 hours of driving from City X to City Y. Note, that the Statement only tells us the average speed and doesn't provide any further detail. We have no information if Shannon drove at a constant speed. Hence, we cannot conclude anything about the time taken for Shaneice to travel the first 200 kilometers.

For example, Shaneice could have covered the first 200 kilometers at a speed of 100 kmph, thereby taking 2 hours to cover the first 200 kilometers. Shaneice then traveled the remaining 40 kilometers in one hour (at a speed of 40 kmph).

Alternatively, Shaneice could have covered the first 200 kilometers at a speed of 200 kmph, thereby taking 1 hour to cover the first 200 kilometers. Shaneice then traveled the remaining 40 kilometers in two hours (at a speed of 20 kmph).

Hence, without further information, we cannot the time taken by Shaneice to cover the first 200 kilometers.

The statement alone is not is not sufficient; we can eliminate A and D.

Statement 2

(2) Shaneice averaged 90 kilometers per hour during the last 2 hours of driving from City X to City Y.

Inference: Shaneice traveled a total of 180 kilometers during the last 2 hours of driving from City X to City Y.

We have no information the speed Shaneice traveled the first 200 kilometers of the journey. Hence, we cannot find the time taken for the travel.

The statement alone is not sufficient. Eliminate B.

Combined

The statements combined provide the following information -

  • Shaneice averaged 80 kilometers per hour during the first 3 hours of driving from City X to City Y.
  • Shaneice averaged 90 kilometers per hour during the last 2 hours of driving from City X to City Y.

There are a couple of issues -

  1. We don't know if there was any overlap of any distance between the first 3 hours of driving and the last 2 hours of driving from City X to City Y
  2. Even if we assume there was no overlap, the ambiguity outlined in the analysis of Statement 1 remains. As we have no information on the speed Shaneice drove the first 200 kilometers, we cannot conclude the time taken by Shaneice to travel the first 200 kilometers

The statements combined do not help.

Option E
I agree the answer is E, but I don't really understand the claim you made that "We don't know if there was any overlap of any distance between the first 3 hours of driving and the last 2 hours of driving from City X to City Y." Since we know she drove exactly 5 hours, wouldn't it be true that there wasn't any overlap in distance between the first 3 hours and the last 2 hours?
