(1) the telephone charges were $0.75 in total for the first two minutes and $0.45 for each additional minute or fraction of a minute.

Let the number of minutes that Vijay was charged for = \(x\)

\(0.75 + 0.45(x-2) = 15.15\)

\(0.45x - 0.15 = 15.15\)

\(0.45x = 15.30\)

\(x = 34\)

SUFFICIENT

(2) if the charge for the first two minutes had been $1.70, Vijay's total cost would have been $16.10

From this one can deduce that the difference between the two phonecalls is \(16.10 - 15.15 = 0.95\) and thus the first two minutes of the phonecall are charged at \(0.75\). However, not enough is known about the pay structure. Is each minute equally charged? Is there a set price for the first two minutes and another price for the rest?

INSUFFICIENT

ANSWER A
I have a similar doubt as Shwarma

After the first two minutes, even if Vijay spoke for \(31 \)minutes and a few more seconds he could still be charged for \(32\) whole minutes \(0.45 *32 = 14.4\)

So overall \(14.4 +0.75 = 15.15\)

Hence how can you deduce that he spoke for exactly \(32\) minutes ( after the first two minutes)  and not \(31\) minutes and a few more seconds. Because in both the cases he would be charged for \(32\) whole minutes.

Thank you.

Hey there! The question doesn't ask how long the phone call was, rather how many minutes he was charged for :) From my understanding, regardless of the decimal value of the length of the call, it will be rounded up to the nearest integer value (eg. 31.3 minutes after the first two minutes is charged as if it had been 32 minutes).

If it were asking for the length of the phone call, I would have gone for E.

Hope this clears things out.

Yes, now I see the question correctly, misinterpreted it. Thanks.
