Anne and Bill each invested in both stocks and bonds in 2007. Who had a higher percent return on their total investment in stocks and bonds?

(1) Anne had a higher percent return than Bill on stocks in 2007.

(2) Anne had a higher percent return than Bill on bonds in 2007.

What we need to find is w ho had a higher percent return on their total investment in stocks and bonds?

If Stocks is S and Bonds is B

does Anne's percent return is higher than Bills Percent return

Even if we don't know the exact amounts of both, getting to know if
Anne's return is greater for both S and B will answer Yes
Anne's return is less for both S and B will answer No

A) Only S% return is greater for Anne - insufficient
B) Only B% return is greater for Anne - insufficient
Combining both, we get what we wanted

So C is correct
knowing just these percent returns on individual investments isn't enough. For example, if Anne's investments were heavily weighted toward stocks and Bill's toward bonds, or vice versa, the total percent returns could vary significantly.

Hello Dishan123

"Percentage Returns" would still be calculated on the amount each person has invested individually and since Anne has higher returns in both cases, Anne should have higher "Percentage Returns". Is it not true?

Even if was heavily weighted as you said, Still it is saying that it has greater proportion of those 'weights' for anne
So wouldn't combining the answer tell us that anne has greater % return?

Even though Anne had higher individual returns, Bill's overall return could be higher due to his different investment distribution. This is why, without the exact amounts, we can't confirm who has the higher total return just from the given statements.
So, combining the statements still doesn't give us the full picture of the total percent return for Anne and Bill without knowing how much each invested in stocks and bonds.
